Getting the timing right is essential to help you feel comfortable, beautiful, and full of joy, instead of feeling rushed and exhausted. Pregnancy is one of the most extraordinary things a human body can do. It's important to understand the brief window of time where your body is doing things it may never do again. It's about how you want to feel in those images, how comfortable you'll be in the water, and how your bump will look at its most beautifully round state.
Not all trimesters are created equal when it comes to underwater maternity photography.
First Trimester - Weeks 1-13
The bump is not yet visible, energy levels are often low, and any kind of physical activity is challenging. Most expecting mothers are also still in the early stage where they do not feel their best, may be experiencing morning sickness and are not up to getting into the water.
From a photographic standpoint, the defining element of a maternity session, the pronounced beautiful round belly simply isn't there yet.
Second Trimester - Weeks 14-27
AS your baby develops, this can be the sweet spot for scheduling your maternity underwater shoot. Energy has returned, morning sickness had typically eased, the bump is beginning to become beautifully round, and you're still physically comfortable and mobile in the water. Ideally, the window of weeks between 26-32 in particular hits a magical balance: big enough to look stunning, and early enough to still feel good.
Third Trimester - Weeks 28-40
Early in the 3rd trimester can still work well for underwater maternity shots. Weeks 28-32 are often the most dramatic visually. However, as you move past 32 weeks, comfort in the water decreases, back strain becomes more pronounced, and the unpredictability of late pregnancy makes scheduling more stressful. Always consult your doctor before booking in the 3rd trimester.
If I could give every expectant mother one piece of advice, to would be to book your session between weeks 28-32. Your bump is at its most beautiful state and you still have energy and physical ease to enjoy the experience.
The water will feel wonderful, weightless and liberating. You'll have plenty of time before your due date to receive and enjoy your artwork before the baby arrives. Don't wait too long because the window passes quicker than you think.
One thing most expectant mothers aren't prepared for is the feelings they feel once they enter the water for the first time. Pregnancy, especially in the later months, comes with weight. It's the physical weight, but also the weight of discomfort, of waddle, of feeling heavy and earthbound. Water removes all that! You become weightless. Your bump, which may have felt cumbersome on dry land for weeks, suddenly feels suspended, gently and extraordinary. "The water give you back a feeling you may not have had in months... that your body is graceful. powerful, and entirely your own."
From a photographic perspective, the water does something beautiful to the pregnant form. The gentle diffusion of light underwater softens everything. Curves become radiant, the bump becomes the clear, celebrated center of the image, and the surrounding water creates a sense of something sacred and still. No other maternity photography looks like this!
The bump also photographs exceptionally well at the surface of the water, where the light refracts and reflects most beautifully. Many of the most stunning underwater images I've ever captured have been taken within just a few feet of the surface.
Your health and the wellbeing of the baby comes before everything else with an underwater maternity session. With that said, underwater maternity sessions are entirely safe for healthy pregnancies when approached with the right care and precautions.
1. Always get your doctor's clearance first. Before booking any underwater session during pregnancy, I strongly recommend speaking with your healthcare provider. This should be done and applies regardless of how straightforward your pregnancy has been.
2. No deep breath-holds required. Maternity sessions are carefully structured so that breath-holds are gentle and brief, typically just a few seconds. You are never asked to push beyond what feels comfortable and natural. We will work on breath-holds before you ever enter the water.
3. The pool is shallow - you can stand at any time. The maximum depth of the pool is 5 feet deep. However, I usually shoot in 4 foot deep water or less to accommodate the beautiful reflections from the surface. You are always within standing distance of the bottom, and there is no moment in the session where you are out of your depth.
4. A female safety swimmer is in the pool next to you at all times. Their only job is your wellbeing and comfort. If you feel uncomfortable or flustered for any reason, the safety swimmer is there to assist you and get you safely to the side. You are never alone in the water, and help is always within arm's reach.
5. Unhurried, rest-as-needed pace. Maternity sessions are structured with generous rest-time built in. You will never be rushed. We surface, we breathe, we take our time. If you need to stop for any reason, at any point, we stop. No questions asked, no pressure, ever.
6. Warm, private setup waiting for you. A heated canopy tent with a private changing space means you step from the water directly into warmth and privacy. No shivering, no discomfort.
Your bump will never look exactly like this again. The water is waiting and the images we make together will be something you will treasure for the rest of your life. There's nothing like the feeling you get being weightless underwater. The images we make are completely unlike anything you have seen of yourself before.
The window is shorter than it feels. Weeks 28-32 move quickly, especially when you're busy preparing for the arrival of a new little one. Book early, plan thoughtfully, and trust the process. I will take care of every detail from the moment you arrive to the moment your artwork is hung on your wall. This leaves you free to simply float, breathe, and be exactly who and where you are. Which is, right now, somewhere extraordinary!
